MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger

VOTE NO on the House Budget Proposal

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Budget recently voted in support of a budget proposal for FY 2017. Though the Republican committee leadership titled this proposal “A Balanced Budget for a Stronger America,” it raises serious questions about who is actually strengthened by their plan and on whose backs it is balanced.

A budget makes a statement about our values and priorities as a nation. As such, a budget should be viewed as a moral document that reflects our collective aspirations and core beliefs.

Please join us in telling your Representative that this budget does not reflect our nation’s values and priorities.

The House Budget Committee’s budget proposes harmful policy changes and funding cuts to safety net programs that provide critical assistance to millions of Americans. They propose to slash funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and convert the program to a block grant to states. The changes in this budget would end food assistance and cut benefits for millions of low-income families.

It is simply unconscionable for Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote in favor of the House Budget Committee proposal that would increase hunger, poverty and hardship in this country. A vote in favor of this budget by Members of Congress contradicts their claims that helping the poor is a priority, belies statements of having no preconceived notions about the SNAP program and that the Farm Bill should not be reopened, and runs counter to our American values of caring for the most vulnerable.

Viewed through a basic moral lens, the House Budget Committee’s FY 2017 budget proposal should be rejected when considered by the full House of Representatives. Please send a strong message to your Representative and urge them to vote “NO” for this severe and misguided budget proposal.
