MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger

Protect and Strengthen SNAP for Seniors!

The results of the 2016 election had major consequences for our country. But for low-income families, including vulnerable seniors, the stakes could not be higher. May is Older Americans Month – time to reflect on the seniors who’ve made a difference in all our lives. Older Americans built our families, our communities, and our country. These same seniors increasingly are challenged by food insecurity. As we see 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each day, we see an ever-growing challenge in supporting these seniors. This month, we must take the time to speak out to ensure that older Americans are able to lead their lives with dignity and free from hardship. We must take action to protect the vital support available for the 10 million seniors nationwide who face the threat of hunger.

President Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress have already indicated they plan to make drastic changes that will gut long-standing and vital programs for the most vulnerable Americans, including Medicaid, Social Security and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has previously introduced dangerous proposals to change the structure of SNAP that will eviscerate the program and its funding. Now there is a real threat that his plan could advance, causing millions to suffer.

SNAP is the nation’s most important anti-hunger program and a major pillar of the nation’s safety net. It protects against hunger and lifts millions of people out of poverty. The magnitude of “reforms” likely to be introduced early in the Trump Administration would dramatically increase hunger and poverty.

Can we risk millions of seniors losing their access to the life-saving assistance provided by SNAP? Will we condemn millions of older Americans to a meager diet of cheap and unhealthy food as they face illness in their older years? Please join MAZON in urging your Member of Congress and Senators to protect the SNAP program and the millions of Americans who cannot feed their families without it.
